Agriculture, Art, Band, and Chorus. Students should review the elective course descriptions below and sign up for their top two choices via the Elective Registration Form. Every effort will be made to honor those requests. Bus transportation will be made available to those who wish to utilize it. Please keep in mind that the FCPS COVID-19 safety plan will be followed, which requires the use of masks for everyone in our building. Please complete the registration by Friday, November 20, 2020.

The MSVA is working to provide synchronous, student interest-based clubs for those students who attend virtually.

Elective Course Descriptions

ABMS Chorus
In 6th, 7th and 8th grade chorus classes, students will have the opportunity to learn warm-up techniques, proper posture and breathing for singing, vocal exercises, rounds, and some of the same music students are learning in the classroom this year. Students will also play musical games and activities that support middle school choral skills. Students will be given access to Google Classroom, which includes several resources, websites, and recordings that will help them continue to work at home throughout the week.

Band - Beginning Instrumental Music
Students in grade 6, 7, or 8 will learn how to assemble and properly make sounds on a variety of musical instruments. While playing instruments, students will learn music literacy through pitch and rhythmic notation by performing simple songs. Also, students will demonstrate basic cleaning and maintenance of instruments by learning the proper techniques and procedures associated with their instrument.

Band - Instrumental Music - 1 or 2 years of experience
Students that have received 1 or 2 years of instruction will continue the fundamentals of music through performance on a wind or percussion instrument. Students will review proper assembly and maintenance for their instrument. The educational objectives for students will be to review basic sound production in order to produce correct tones and pitches, identifying and performing rhythmic notation, and learning new signs or symbols associated with level appropriate band literature. Students will demonstrate proficiency in music literacy by performing alone or in a group setting.

Due to COVID restrictions, PE looks very different this year, but we are still able to move and have fun doing so! If you choose to do PE, you will be able to participate in many lifetime leisure activities (Golf, Tennis, Pickleball, Badminton, KanJam, Disc Golf, Cornhole, Horseshoes, Bocce, etc.), team sport skill activities (basketball, volleyball, soccer, football, etc.) as well as fitness activities in the weight room. The restrictions include, keeping your mask on at ALL times inside, staying 10 feet away from others when exercising or when outside without a mask, NO sharing equipment with others and all equipment must be cleaned by the teacher after use.

Exploring Agriculture: Ms. Kathy Lineburg
After successfully passing general safety requirements and properly demonstrating the safe use of tools, students will have an opportunity to construct a unique woodworking project(s). Depending on the level of experience in woodworking, students will be trained to properly measure and use tools such as a hand saw, hammer, scroll saw, wood burner, hand drill, router, sanders or pen lathe. Woodworking projects can include cutting board, bulletin board, crate, pen, hot plate and/or wood signs. Each project will be uniquely designed by the student through a variety of examples or material such as stains and paint.

Tech Ed.
Students participating in the Technology and Engineering Virtual Academy will have the opportunity to design and create various hands-on design-based projects. Just like class, students will be responsible for passing all necessary safety exams to maintain a safe working environment. Possible projects include coding, electronics, Computer-Aided Drawing, 3D printing, graphic design, and material processing projects in the shop.

Virtual Academy- Art
Students will be given art challenges to encourage growth with their creative problem solving skills. These challenges will include a variety of Art mediums, including: Drawing, Painting, Collage and Sculpture. For completion of these artworks students will use a variety of materials, both traditional and nontraditional!
